Designed by KMF Architects and Brooks + Scarpa, the University of North Florida Interfaith Chapel was envisioned as a place of reflection, understanding, and community for people of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds. Located within the natural landscape of the university campus, the chapel serves as a welcoming sanctuary where students, faculty, staff, and visitors can gather for worship, contemplation, celebration, and personal renewal.

The chapel was conceived as a symbol of unity rather than a representation of any single faith tradition. Its design promotes mutual respect, dialogue, and shared experiences, creating a space that embraces diversity while fostering a sense of belonging and connection throughout the campus community.

The building's sculptural form draws inspiration from flowing ceremonial garments and allegorical representations of virtues such as faith, hope, charity, and wisdom. Rising above the sanctuary, a dramatic skylight is crowned by a wooden lattice spire derived from the symbol of infinity, allowing natural light to filter gently into the interior and create a serene, uplifting atmosphere. Throughout the day, shifting patterns of light and shadow animate the space, reinforcing a sense of wonder and reflection.

The chapel's design carefully integrates the surrounding natural environment and celestial elements. Openings throughout the building frame views of the adjacent lake, wooded landscapes, and sky, establishing a meaningful connection between the sanctuary and its setting. A unique north-facing window within the sanctuary is precisely aligned with Polaris, the North Star, creating a symbolic link between the building, the natural world, and the broader universe. Additional openings are oriented to capture seasonal solar events, allowing natural light to mark the changing rhythms of time and nature.

Designed to accommodate a wide variety of religious services, ceremonies, lectures, weddings, musical performances, and meditative practices, the Interfaith Chapel serves as both a spiritual refuge and a gathering place for the university community. Through its thoughtful integration of architecture, light, landscape, and symbolism, the chapel provides a timeless environment that encourages reflection, understanding, and connection among all who enter.
