KMF Architects designed a new perimeter wall for the City of Orlando Fleet Management Facility that transforms a functional security requirement into a distinctive architectural feature. Located along Gore Street, the 16-foot-tall precast concrete wall enhances site security, reduces noise from facility operations, and establishes a stronger visual connection between the facility and the surrounding community.
Rather than creating a conventional barrier, the design reimagines the perimeter as a sculptural edge that contributes to the character of the streetscape. Inspired by the patterns and textures of woven textiles, the wall incorporates a series of subtly recessed and projecting precast panels that create depth, shadow, and visual movement throughout the day. As sunlight shifts across the surface, the wall's appearance continuously changes, bringing texture and interest to an otherwise utilitarian element.
The design was carefully developed to respond to the existing site conditions. Portions of the wall were lowered to preserve the canopies of mature oak trees along the property edge, while integrated planting opportunities allow vegetation to soften the scale of the concrete structure over time. The combination of landscape and architecture creates a balance between the built and natural environments, providing habitat opportunities while enhancing the pedestrian experience.
Composed of five unique panel types arranged in a flowing sequence, the wall creates a dynamic visual rhythm for both motorists and pedestrians traveling along Gore Street. The result is a functional piece of civic infrastructure that not only secures and screens the Fleet Management Facility, but also establishes a memorable identity for the site and contributes to the urban fabric of Orlando.
