KMF Architects partnered with the City of Orlando to design a 15,000-square-foot solar canopy at the City's Fleet Maintenance Facility, transforming an existing parking and operations area into a high-performance asset that supports sustainability, resilience, and fleet operations.
The project combines renewable energy generation with functional infrastructure, providing covered parking and electric vehicle charging capabilities for a diverse municipal fleet that includes police vehicles, fire apparatus support vehicles, public works equipment, and administrative vehicles. The canopy's expansive photovoltaic array captures solar energy while simultaneously protecting vehicles and staff from Florida's intense sun and weather conditions.
Designed as both an operational and environmental investment, the structure advances the City's commitment to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while preparing for the continued transition to electric and alternative-fuel vehicles. Integrated charging stations support fleet electrification initiatives and provide a flexible platform for future expansion as vehicle technologies evolve.
The design prioritizes durability, efficiency, and ease of use, creating a large-scale covered staging and parking environment that supports daily municipal operations without disrupting existing fleet activities. The canopy's clean structural expression and highly visible solar array serve as a public demonstration of the City's commitment to innovation and sustainable infrastructure.
By combining renewable energy production, vehicle protection, and fleet modernization into a single facility, the project represents a forward-thinking approach to municipal operations. The completed solar canopy helps reduce operating costs, improves user comfort, and supports Orlando's long-term sustainability goals while providing critical infrastructure for one of the City's most important operational facilities.
