Assessment

KMF Architects partnered with the City of St. Cloud to conduct a comprehensive historic preservation assessment of the Peghorn Cannery Building, a significant cultural resource located within Peghorn Nature Park. Originally constructed in 1935, the building stands as a lasting reminder of the resilience, ingenuity, and community spirit that helped sustain Central Florida families during the challenges of the Great Depression.
Serving as a community cannery, the facility played a vital role in local food preservation efforts. Residents gathered to clean, prepare, and can vegetables from nearby gardens while processing meats sourced from local farms, providing an essential resource during times of economic hardship. More than a production facility, the cannery served as a place of cooperation and mutual support, strengthening connections among community members and helping preserve a way of life that shaped the region's history.
Recognizing the building's historical significance, KMF performed a detailed assessment of its architectural features, historic materials, and overall condition. The evaluation documented existing conditions, identified areas requiring repair or stabilization, and established preservation priorities intended to guide future restoration and maintenance efforts.
As part of the assessment, KMF developed recommendations focused on protecting the building's historic character while supporting its continued use and interpretation. The preservation strategy emphasizes retaining original materials wherever possible and utilizing historically appropriate replacement materials and construction techniques when repairs are necessary. This balanced approach allows the building to remain authentic to its origins while ensuring its long-term durability and functionality.
Today, the Peghorn Cannery remains a rare example of Florida's vernacular utility architecture and an important link to the agricultural heritage of St. Cloud. The assessment provides the City with a roadmap for responsible stewardship, helping preserve the building's historic fabric while ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate this unique piece of local history.
The project reflects KMF Architects' commitment to historic preservation and community heritage, demonstrating how thoughtful planning and documentation can help safeguard the stories, places, and traditions that define a community's identity.
