KMF Architects led the comprehensive restoration of the historic Walker-Hendry House, one of Orlando's oldest remaining Victorian-era residences and an important piece of the city's architectural heritage. Originally constructed in 1894, the 2,230-square-foot home was designated an Orlando Historic Landmark in 1978 and has experienced a remarkable journey through the city's history, including two relocations before arriving at its current site in downtown Orlando.

After years of occupancy, the home eventually fell into disrepair and was left vacant, exposed to the effects of weather, neglect, and storm damage. Recognizing the building's historical significance, KMF Architects undertook an extensive restoration effort to preserve the structure and return it to its former character while ensuring its long-term viability.

The project included the restoration of both the exterior envelope and interior architectural features. Significant repairs were required to address water intrusion, structural deterioration, damaged woodwork, failing porches and stairs, deteriorated trim, and historic finishes that had been lost or severely damaged over time. Advanced investigative techniques, including robotic crawlspace inspections, were utilized to assess hidden conditions and guide the restoration process.

A key focus of the project was the preservation and rehabilitation of original historic elements wherever possible. Windows, hardware, hinges, doorknobs, doorbells, trim, baseboards, casings, cabinetry, flooring, and fireplaces were carefully removed, restored, repaired, or replicated using historically appropriate materials and techniques. When original materials could not be salvaged, extensive research was conducted to identify suitable replacements that met the standards of historic preservation and received approval from the Historic Preservation Officer.

In addition to restoring the home's historic character, the project introduced modern building systems, including new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, insulation, and roofing systems, ensuring the building could continue to serve future generations while maintaining its historic integrity.

Today, the Walker-Hendry House stands once again as a treasured Orlando landmark. Surrounded by the growth and development of downtown, the restored home provides a tangible connection to the city's past and demonstrates how thoughtful preservation can protect and celebrate historic architecture for years to come.
